What is the CEC?

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the three federal immigration programs managed through Express Entry. It is specifically designed for temporary workers and international graduates who have gained skilled work experience in Canada and want to transition to permanent residence.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

If you are already in Canada on a work permit or Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), the CEC is likely your most direct route to permanent residence. Because you already have Canadian work experience, you may have a competitive CRS score.

Eligibility Requirements

You need at least 12 months of full-time skilled work experience in Canada (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) within the last three years. Language requirements vary by TEER category: CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1 occupations, or CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3. No educational credential assessment is required, though education still contributes to your CRS score.

Quick Tip

Self-employment and work experience gained while studying full-time does not count toward CEC eligibility. Make sure your qualifying work experience was accumulated after graduation or outside of full-time study periods.
