What is the NOC?

The National Occupation Classification (NOC) is Canada's standardized system for classifying occupations. Every occupation in Canada is assigned a five-digit NOC code, which describes the duties, skills, and education required for that job. The NOC is maintained by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Statistics Canada.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

Your NOC code determines your eligibility for many immigration programs. Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and work permits all reference NOC codes to assess whether your occupation qualifies. Getting the correct NOC code is critical for your application.

How to Find Your NOC Code

Search the NOC website using your job title or main duties. Read the lead statement and main duties listed under each code carefully. Your NOC code should match what you actually do at work, not just your job title, since titles vary widely between countries and employers.

Quick Tip

If you are unsure about your NOC code, look at the main duties rather than the job title. Match at least 70% of the listed duties to your actual role. Using the wrong NOC code can result in your application being refused.
