What is MSP?

The Medical Services Plan (MSP) is British Columbia's provincial health insurance program. It covers medically required services including visits to doctors, some specialist services, maternity care, and diagnostic services. Since January 2020, there are no monthly MSP premiums for BC residents.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

If you settle in British Columbia, MSP is your primary health coverage. Registration is essential for accessing healthcare without direct costs. Like Ontario, BC has a waiting period for new residents, during which private insurance is needed.

How to Enroll

You can enroll in MSP online through Health Insurance BC or by mailing a completed registration form. You need your immigration documents and proof of BC residency. Once enrolled, you receive a BC Services Card that you present when accessing healthcare services.

Quick Tip

The MSP waiting period is generally three months from your date of establishing residence in BC. Apply as soon as you arrive and arrange private health insurance for the waiting period. Some employers provide extended health benefits that start before your MSP coverage kicks in.
