What is Permanent Residence?

Permanent Residence (PR) is an immigration status that grants a foreign national the right to live, work, and study anywhere in Canada on an indefinite basis. Permanent residents enjoy most of the same rights as Canadian citizens, including access to healthcare and social services, but cannot vote or hold certain government positions.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

PR status is the goal for most economic immigrants to Canada. It provides stability, full access to the Canadian labour market without a work permit, eligibility for provincial healthcare, and the ability to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting residency requirements.

Maintaining PR Status

To maintain your PR status, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within every five-year period. Time spent outside Canada while accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or working for a Canadian employer abroad may count toward this requirement.

Quick Tip

Start tracking your days in Canada from the day you land. If you plan to travel extensively, ensure you meet the residency obligation. Failing to meet the 730-day requirement can result in losing your PR status.
