What is PTE Core?

Pearson Test of English Core (PTE Core) is a computer-based English language proficiency test accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration and citizenship applications. It was introduced as a third approved English test alongside IELTS and CELPIP. PTE Core tests listening, reading, speaking, and writing in an integrated format.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

PTE Core gives candidates another option for proving English proficiency. Its computer-based format means results are typically available within 48 hours, much faster than IELTS. This can be valuable when you need scores quickly to meet application deadlines.

How Scoring Works

PTE Core scores are on a scale of 10 to 90 for each skill. IRCC provides a conversion table mapping PTE Core scores to CLB levels. For example, specific score ranges correspond to CLB 7, CLB 9, and so on, allowing you to determine your eligibility for various programs.

Quick Tip

PTE Core uses AI-powered scoring for speaking and writing, which some test-takers find less stressful than speaking with a human examiner. Take the official practice tests on the Pearson website to familiarize yourself with the question types and timing before your test.
