Landlord and Tenant Board
LTB
Ontario's tribunal that resolves disputes between residential landlords and tenants.
What is the LTB?
The Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) is a tribunal in Ontario that resolves disputes between residential landlords and tenants. It operates under the Residential Tenancies Act and handles issues such as rent increases, evictions, maintenance disputes, and the return of security deposits.
Why It Matters for Newcomers
Understanding the LTB is essential if you rent in Ontario. As a tenant, you have significant legal protections, including limits on rent increases, rules about when and how a landlord can evict you, and the right to a habitable living space. The LTB is where you go if your landlord violates these rights.
How It Works
Either a landlord or tenant can file an application with the LTB. The board schedules a hearing (in person, by phone, or video), considers evidence from both sides, and issues a binding order. Common tenant applications include complaints about maintenance issues, illegal rent increases, or harassment by the landlord.
Quick Tip
Know your rights before signing a lease in Ontario. Landlords cannot charge more than one month's rent as a last month's deposit, cannot charge key deposits beyond the actual cost, and cannot increase rent more than the provincial guideline amount each year.
