What is an eTA?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are flying to or transiting through Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. An eTA allows multiple entries to Canada.

Why It Matters for Newcomers

If you are from a visa-exempt country, you need an eTA to board a flight to Canada. Without one, you may be denied boarding by the airline. An eTA is not required if you are entering Canada by land or sea, or if you already hold a valid Canadian visa or are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

How to Apply

The eTA application is completed online on the IRCC website and costs $7 CAD. Most applications are approved within minutes, though some may take several days if additional processing is needed. You need a valid passport, an email address, and a credit or debit card.

Quick Tip

Apply for your eTA before booking flights, not at the airport. While most are approved instantly, delays can happen. Also note that permanent residents of Canada who are not citizens still need a PR Card (not an eTA) to board a return flight to Canada.
